Screen Capture Review

Post  Tom on Sun Apr 27, 2008 11:45 pm

This thread is for you to post your thoughts on the screen capture scene for Artifact four. Here is a copy of the email that I sent out...

Dear GroupFilm members,

I have not emailed you like this in a long time it seems; however, I do now have an update! With thanks to David Sexton, I have created the scene that uses screen capture technology to show the instant messaging between our main character, Sarah and the Internet weirdo, Chris. I played the girl and changed my MSN name to Sarah and my font to pink. God knows what people on my buddy list thought. Sexton played the sexual predator, and got a little too into it if you ask me… but that’s a different issue…
Anyway, would really appreciate it if you would take a look at the result and post what you think of it. Just a short blurb will do.

Bear in mind that I have sped up the video by 250%, as it was very, very slow and I would not put anyone through watching it for that long! Also, please ignore the annoying flickering that the video does… I think this has something to do with the compression that I have used on the video. The video is a 154MB QuickTime file.

Some things to think about are:

• How do you rate this method as a narrative device?

• How was it to watch? Was it exciting/boring/hard to follow?

• How was the pace of the scene? Was the whole thing too slow? Was the pace of the individual lines accurate enough to build tension in the scene?

• Can you think of any other ways of carrying the narrative other than using this method?

• How would you improve the scene?

• Did the individual personalities of the characters show through during the scene? If so, how do you think this happened?

Any thoughts, ponderings or suggestions would be welcome. The video is only about four minutes and I just want a quick two-minute blurb, so it shouldn’t take too much time at all.

Next time I email you I should have some sort of webcam scene for you to take a look at.

See you all soon,

Tom
